The Bubble Chair was originally conceived in 1968 and is one of Eero Aarnio's most recognizable and highly publicized works. Its clear acrylic structure envelops the occupant and evokes a sense of soothing tranquility. A favorite of rock stars, fashion photographers and Hollywood personalities, the Bubble chair has left an indelible impression on popular culture and stretched the boundaries of modern design. Aarnio's creation challenged all preconceptions of how a chair should function. Its suspended, transparent form imbues the design with an other-worldly character completely counter to traditional notions of a chair with four legs rooted to the ground. Eero Aarnio was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1932, studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts and opened his own interior and industrial design office in 1962. Aarnio's iconoclastic seating solutions captured the optimism of the pop culture movement of the 1960s with their visually exciting, space-age forms. His designs possess both internationalism and individualism while upholding the traditional Scandinavian concern for aesthetic purity, quality and durability. Aarnio's inquisitive spirit led him to experiment with the synthetic capabilities of fiberglass and acrylic, culminating in his best-known designs, including the iconic Ball chair (1963), Pastille chair (1967) and the revolutionary, suspended Bubble chair (1968). His work resides in collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Eero Aarnio continues to design furniture, lighting, and everyday objects in his studio in Helsinki, where he lives and works.
